Some jobs come with a slightly bigger brief than usual. Balloon Man Spain was carefully selected by Royal Caribbean to lead the design and balloon installation for the inauguration of Legend of the Seas — the newest ship in Royal Caribbean's Icon Class and, at launch, the world's largest cruise ship — as she set sail on her inaugural voyage from Malaga.
Getting the job
A brief like this doesn't land by accident. Working with a cruise line of Royal Caribbean's scale meant a proper vetting process — interviews, background checks and a stack of paperwork before we ever picked up a balloon. It's a different world to a villa wedding, but exactly the kind of large-scale, high-stakes install Cristino's background as Marbella's leading balloon sculptor was built for.
The install
The brief called for a full-height balloon surround framing the official Legend of the Seas launch backdrop at Malaga Cruise Port — built entirely in Royal Caribbean's ocean palette of blues and greens, finished with organic clusters, chrome silver orbs and oversized silver star balloons. We also ran matching balloon garlands the length of the terminal's boarding walkway, so the theme carried through from the moment guests arrived to the moment they stepped aboard.
Scale was the real challenge here: a install this size, in a working cruise terminal, on a fixed schedule, with zero room for a redo once the ship's guests started arriving.
On the day
Legend of the Seas departed Malaga on her inaugural sailing with our balloon backdrop as the official photo moment for travel partners, media and guests boarding for the very first time — and we couldn't resist a few photos of our own in front of it once the install was done.
